    Location Details

Discover unique culture and history in Sitka

Located in Alaska’s Inside Passage region, Sitka owes much of its heritage to both Czarist Russia and Native Tlingit cultures. The Tlingit people originally settled the town more than 10,000 years ago, with the Russians arriving and settling Old Sitka in 1799. In 1848, the Cathedral of St. Michael was built and became the seat of the Russian Orthodox Bishop of Kamchatka, the Kurile and Aleutian Islands and Alaska. In 1867, when the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, Sitka became Alaska’s first capital city.

Accessible only by air or sea, Sitka lies at the heart of the Tongass National Forest, one of the largest temperate rain forests in the world. The town offers spectacular scenery as well as a window into Sitka’s rich history, with twenty-two buildings and sites that appear on the National Register of Historic Places. At the Sitka National Historical Park, replica totem poles from the region are on display throughout the two miles of wooded pathways.

The Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka is an excellent place to get up close and personal with bald and golden eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. The center provides medical treatment to injured raptors, conducts research, and provides visitors with an opportunity to learn more about Alaska’s birds. To catch sight of one of these magnificent birds in their natural environment, take a hike on one of Sitka’s many trails, or head out in a kayak to explore the Sitka Sound. Against the backdrop of glacier-carved mountains and lush forests, make sure to also keep your eye out for humpback whales, bears, and sea otters.

The Westmark Sitka Hotel is located in the heart of downtown within walking distance of some of Sitka’s most popular tourist attractions.
